Following a 68-61 loss to Oklahoma State on Tuesday, West Virginia women’s basketball head coach Mark Kellogg spoke on his team’s performance as they are on a three-game losing streak.
“I felt like we did not have our normal punch. When the game started, we just physically and mentally, could not quite match up with them,” Kellogg said.
The No. 24 Mountaineers struggled throughout the game against the Cowgirls, shooting only 37.9% from the floor, compared to Oklahoma State’s 49%. West Virginia also amassed five turnovers within the first quarter, allowing OSU the lead, 16-12.
With a rest day on Wednesday, the Mountaineers will hope to regroup and prepare for the Big 12 Tournament as they have just one regular season game left before they head to Kansas City.
“Just need to find a little momentum here to finish and get into the conference tournament and see if we can make some noise there and continue from that point on,” Kellogg said.
This is also the first time this season the Mountaineers have dealt with significant adversity. Kellogg said that is allowing his group to continue to learn and grow, as they are now in unfamiliar territory.
“Something we haven’t experienced as a group. So we’re learning and growing through this process,” Kellogg said. “We haven’t had a clunker or really a disappointing performance much for the season. So I guess every team, you might be due for one, so maybe we got that one out of the way and we can regroup a little bit.”
In their last regular season game against TCU at home, whom they previously beat on Feb. 13, Kellogg expressed the team’s need to get back to winning ways.
“We know what the formula is, but we just need to get back to it. TCU is super talented, well coached, so our whole attention is on them,” Kellogg said.
With a win against the Horned Frogs, the Mountaineers will remain in the top seed for the Big 12 tournament, which begins on Mar. 7. Tip-off against TCU is set for 1 p.m. at the Coliseum and will be streamed on ESPN+.
