West Virginia honored former women’s basketball coach Kittie Blakemore last weekend

Over the weekend, West Virginia honored the first women’s basketball coach in program history, Kittie Blakemore, by unveiling the newly named “Kittie Blakemore Drive” on West Virginia’s Evansdale campus.

Blakemore started the program in 1973, where she compiled a record of 301-214 over the next 19 seasons, including an Atlantic-10 tournament championship in 1989, as well as the regular season A-10 title in 1992. Both of those years would be the only NCAA tournament births Blakemore would have.

Following her retirement after the 1992 season, Blakemore served as WVU’s assistant athletic director for sports development, as well as being the senior women’s administrator until she retired in 1997.

In 2017, Blakemore was named an inaugural member of the Mountaineers Legends Society.
