With four games to go in the regular season, West Virginia women’s basketball is still in a fight near the top of the Big 12 standings.
The Mountaineers knocked off first place Oklahoma on Saturday, and are still in a three-way tie for second as Kansas State and Texas both picked up wins.
Oklahoma is first in the Big 12 at 12-2, while the other three teams are only a game back at 11-3. As it stands right now, Texas holds the tiebreaker over WVU with their win over the Mountaineers. Wednesday’s game between WVU and Kansas State will determine who holds the tiebreaker between those two schools and the winner will have a leg up heading into the final week of the season.
WVU holds the tiebreaker over Oklahoma, while the Sooners split with Kansas State, and beat Texas, but they have one more game scheduled in the regular season against Texas. Kansas State and Texas finished the season series 1-1 against each other.
Right now, there are three teams at 8-6, meaning KSU, Texas, and WVU, all need to win two of their final three games to ensure they clinch a top-four seed in the Big 12 Tournament.
For West Virginia, if they were to get to at least 13 wins in league play, it means, they would finish with at worst, a 13-5 league record. The five league losses is still fewer than any of the teams that are at 8-6, ensuring a top four finish. What that would do is give the Mountaineers a double bye in the Big 12 Tournament,
This means, WVU’s first game action in the tournament would happen in the quarterfinals, and they would only have to play three games in four days instead of having to play four or five games if they were to make it to the Big 12 Championship.
Out of WVU’s final four games, two of them are against teams with a winning record in league play (Kansas State and Baylor). The other two are against Oklahoma State (5-9) and TCU (3-11).
Tip-off for Wednesday’s game between West Virginia and Kansas State is set for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN+.
