It’s always nice to beat your rival, and it’s even better when you do it at home. On September 16, the Mountaineers welcomed in the Panthers and beat them as backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol, along with a strong showing from the WVU defense lifted the Mountaineers over rival Pitt.
Football Wins Duke’s Mayo Bowl
West Virginia capped off a nine-win season for the second time since joining the Big 12 with a big win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Mountaineers were backed by a huge showing from Mountaineer Nation in Charlotte, and they handled North Carolina easily.
Erik Stevenson Scores 31 as WVU Beats No. 15 Auburn
West Virginia had plenty of Erik Stevenson to be thankful for early on in 2023, but one of his biggest moments was his 31-point performance which helped the Mountaineers take down the Tigers. Not only did Stevenson score 31, but he did it in front of Auburn legend Charles Barkley.
Men’s Soccer Makes First College Cup Appearance
West Virginia men’s soccer had an incredible run in this year’s NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers were the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and had a historic run to the Final Four, before they lost to Clemson in the NCAA Semifinals. Dan Stratford and company set the program record for wins in a season. Some wins included a win at the buzzer against No. 3 Portland, and then a beatdown of No. 1 Marshall at home.
Baseball Wins Big 12 Regular Season Title
West Virginia baseball won their first ever Big 12 regular season title this year. Led by JJ Wetherholt, the Mountaineers were ranked in the top ten during the season and eventually lost in the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite that, Wetherholt returns in 2024 while head coach Randy Mazey has his final year as the head coach of the Mountaineers.
Women’s Basketball Beats No. 25 Penn State Under Mark Kellogg
Mark Kellogg was brought in as the new head coach of West Virginia women’s basketball this offseason. The Mountaineers got a top-25 victory over rival Penn State, and that helped them get off to an undefeated start in conference play. Kellogg has been a great hire thus far for WVU, and has put WVU on the map nationally.
