When West Virginia faced Penn State on Saturday, freshman wide receiver Rodney Gallagher was a notable absence.
Head coach Neal Brown addressed Gallagher not playing much outside of on special teams and says that was more game plan specific than anything. Brown did add that if Gallagher takes advantage of his opportunity then he will play more.
“He played on special teams. Tried to get him the ball on the last play of the game,” Brown said of Gallagher. “If you look at the game, we didn’t play a ton of 11 personnel. We didn’t play a ton of 11 personnel and that was game plan specific.”
Brown expects Gallagher to play this week ahead of FCS opponent Duquesne.
“He’ll play more moving forward, he’s going to play,” Brown said. “Retrospect maybe should’ve used him a little bit more in that game. Preston (Fox) played primarily those snaps at that slot receiver. Rodney will play. He’ll play this week and if he produces he’ll play more as the year goes.”
Offensive coordinator Chad Scott also mentioned Gallagher’s name as someone who needs to play and that the Mountaineer offense needs to get the ball to.
“Rodney Gallagher’s another player as well that we need to be able to get the ball to,” Scott said.
