West Virginia has a quarterback selected to start. The only question is which one is it.
Despite not naming a quarterback, head coach Neal Brown has made his decision. That decision was made on a variety of factors which Brown detailed following WVU’s second scrimmage of the fall.
“Really I think just as quarterbacks, I think there’s been a progression leadership wise, there’s been a progression from them feeling comfortable in their own skin and I think that happens with maturity,” Brown said. “There’s been a progression fundamentally, taking the drills we do year round, and being able to apply those in pressure situations. They’ve worked really hard on knowledge of what we’re doing offensively.”
The decision came down to either Garrett Greene or Nicco Marchiol. Greene is the more experienced quarterback, but Brown said he feels comfortable with either.
“I’m comfortable. We’ve got to continue to get better,” Brown said of the position. “This isn’t two weeks before your first game you say, this is it, this is who we are for the rest of the year. There’s got to be a continued growth and I’m pleased where they’re at.”
WVU held their second scrimmage of the fall last Saturday and Brown said what took place at the scrimmage helped him find clarity on the decision.
“It kind of verified what had been happening throughout camp. Both guys have gotten better,” Brown said. “One of them’s performed at a higher level. We’re going to continue to push them. We could play both of them in the game. I feel comfortable with both of them, it’s just it’s been clear who’s ahead at this point.”
