West Virginia is just over a week into fall camp and with that is a quarterback battle between Garrett Greene and Nicco Marhciol.
Quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Sean Reagan compared the two on Friday, as they prepare for the first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday.
“Pleased where we’re at,” Reagan said. “I’m happy where we’re at at this point in camp.”
One big emphasis for Reagan has been the ability to limit repeated mistakes. Reagan said there has been a significant decrease in the number of repeated miscues compared to previous years.
“You can probably count on one hand the amount of repeated mistakes we’ve had and the last time I coached quarterbacks that’s a drastic improvement,” Reagan said. “Do we have a long way to go, yes, but when we correct it, they do a really good job, probably 90-95 percent of the time of trying not to make that happen again.”
As far as the two quarterbacks go against each other, Reagan has been pleased with the play of both so far this fall.
“Nicco’s (Marchiol) really, really talented. He’s had a pretty good fall camp so far,” Reagan said. “What he does a really good job of is when he makes a bad decision or a couple in a row, his resilience and responding to that shows his maturity.”
As for Greene, Reagan said it’s having him do less thinking on the football field.
“He’s really improved with his eyes. The next step we got to do is we got to get him to not think as much and just react,” Reagan said of Greene. “If we can get those plays eliminated then he’s got a chance to be really good as well.”
What Reagan will be looking for as the battle prolongs is the decision making from both Greene and Marchiol.
“Decision making,” Reagan said as a determining factor of who will be the starter. “100 percent decision making. I am looking for 90 percent grade or higher on all decision making… I want them to be 90 percent or higher on decision making and what they’re going to do with the football.”
