West Virginia begins fall camp on Wednesday and with that comes question marks surrounding what they will look like ahead of their Sept. 2 game against Penn State.
Who Will Start at Quarterback
This is the most obvious and biggest question mark surrounding the Mountaineers. Do you give Garrett Greene a chance after he kept the season alive down the stretch last year or are you handing over the reigns to a true sophomore in Nicco Marchiol. Head coach Neal Brown says this will be a battle that lasts the duration of fall camp.
WR Room
There are a lot of guys in West Virginia’s wide receiver room, but is going to seemingly be who Brown feels fits best. There is the obvious answer in Devin Carter, but beyond that it seems like the receiver position will be one that is going to be figured out during August.
Secondary Standouts?
The Mountaineers return a lot of young experience in the secondary as well as have newcomers fighting for spots. Who takes over the roles at cornerback, SPEAR, and other areas in that secondary and how interchangeable are they on the back end.
New Philosophy Working
All spring long, coaches and players alike preached one thing — getting back to the basics and fundamentals. Now it is going to be the time where that is put to the test. Is West Virginia in a good spot as far as tackling, and getting to the ball, and getting lined up, or is that still a struggle. How much did getting back to the basics help the Mountaineers.
Schematics on Offense
This team is simply built to run. There are a stable of running backs along with a deep and experienced offensive line and two quarterbacks who pose a dual threat. How much will they run the ball and how will the offensive scheme look for West Virginia. Brown seems to be calling plays again, but what will new offensive coordinator Chad Scott’s influence be on this offense.
