After losing to Oklahoma on Saturday night to snap a 10 game winning streak, West Virginia was able to take the series from the Sooners on Sunday afternoon with a 9-3 victory.
West Virginia scored a run in the first inning, four in the second inning, and a run in the third before the game entered a three hour rain delay. The Mountaineers added a run in the fourth after the rain delay, and two more in the seventh.
The Mountaineers first run came off the bat of JJ Wetherholt, who hit his team-leading 13th home run over the left field fence to give WVU a 1-0 lead. WVU added four more in the second inning on a bases loaded double by Logan Sauve to score three more. Tevin Tucker followed up with a double of his own to score Sauve and cap off a four run inning.
Grant Hussey added another run in the third inning on a double of his own down the left field line to give the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead after three innings. Logan Sauve led off the fourth inning with his second extra base hit of the game, this time a home run over the left field fence.
Oklahoma scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning on three consecutive singles off Grant Siegel to cut the West Virginia lead to 7-3.
West Virginia added two insurance runs in the seventh inning on a Grant Hussey single up the middle, followed by a Caleb McNeely sacrifice fly to take a 9-3 lead.
David Hagaman closed out the final two innings for the Mountaineers, keeping Oklahoma off the board while allowing only one hit.
West Virginia will head to Pittsburgh on Wednesday for the the third match-up against Pitt of the season after winning the first two. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Charles L. Cost Field.
