No. 12 WVU extends winning streak to 10 with win over Oklahoma

No. 12 West Virginia baseball welcomed Oklahoma for a three-game series on Friday. The cew opponent did not change WVU’s success as the Mountaineers scored early and often to win 9-3, increasing their win streak to 10 games.

It took three batters for WVU to take a 2-0 lead in the first. JJ Wetherholt was hit by a pitch, before Landon Wallace hit a two-run home run to put WVU ahead. Wallace would then begin the Mountaineer rally in the fourth, walking to start the inning, before scoring on a Grant Hussey double. Ellis Garcia would later single to plate Hussey along with Dayne Leonard and put WVU in front 5-1.

Oklahoma got their first run of the game in the top of the fourth, hitting a solo home run off WVU starter Ben Hampton.

Hampton would turn in his best start since early March. Hampton allowed one run on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three over 6.0 innings pitched. Hampton had given up at least three runs in six consecutive outings, but kept the Sooner bats at bay.

The Mountaineers added runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. In the fifth, the first three batters of the inning would reach on a base hit, including doubles from Braden Barry and Hussey. In the sixth, Barry hit an infield single to plate Tevin Tucker, and then in the seventh, Hussey scored on a wild pitch.

The 4-5-6 of WVU’s lineup were able to lead the Mountaineers. Barry, Leonard, and Hussey, went a combined 6-for-11 with four RBI, and five runs scored on the night. Barry stretched his hitting streak to seven games and RBI’s in back-to-back games.

Aidan Major came on in relief of Hampton, and allowed two runs in three innings. Major allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out three.
