The West Virginia baseball team is off to a 25-11 start to the season, and two key pieces of the Mountaineers great start have been named to midseason award watchlists.
Blaine Traxel has started nine games for WVU this season, with a 5-3 record, 64.2 innings pitched, four complete games and a 3.34. The Mountaineers pitcher has been named to the watchlist for the National Pitcher of the Year award, awarded to the best pitcher in college baseball.
Meanwhile Mountaineers shortstop Tevin Tucker has broken out in his senior season failing to hit above .200 in his previous three seasons for WVU. Tucker is hitting .355 with five doubles, three triples and one home run to go along with 16 RBI’s. Tucker has also stolen 13 bases this season while only being caught stealing once. Tucker has helped the bottom of WVU’s lineup this season, getting on base at a .486 clip to turn the lineup over to the top of the order and has scored 33 runs. For his performance so far this season Tucker has been named to the Brooks Wallace Award watchlist, which is awarded to the best shortstop in college baseball.
Traxel and Tucker will look to continue their great seasons as the Mountaineers head into the toughest part of their schedule, with series against TCU, Texas Tech and Texas still to come to end the season.
