The day after the 2022-2023 men’s college basketball season came to an end, West Virginia fifth-year senior Erik Stevenson officially said his goodbye.
In a statement he released, Stevenson thanked West Virginia fans while also shedding light on what is next in his future career plans.
Stevenson first thanked his family and support system for getting him to this point in his career. Stevenson played five college seasons at four schools. Stevenson’s final year was at WVU, where he was an All-Big 12 Third Team selection. Stevenson continued talking about his journey, but ended with his message to Mountaineer fans.
“To the great fans of West Virginia, thank you for accepting me into your family and embracing me into the Mountaineer family for life,” Stevenson wrote. “Through the ups and downs, this was the best year of my life. I made a promise to myself I would give this University everything I had, and I did that. It was never about me, but about the name on the front of that jersey. I will always cherish the memories from playing in the Coliseum and hearing all 14,000 of you come to life. I can’t thank you enough.”
Stevenson concluded, “Since the day I decided I was going to focus on the game of basketball, playing in the NBA was the one and only goal. That still hasn’t changed. I will forever be a Mountaineer.”
Stevenson helped push the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament this year. Stevenson scored 20 or more points in a game nine times. Stevenson’s final collegiate game came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Maryland, scoring nine points in WVU’s 67-65 loss.
