WVU Baseball’s win streak ends against Hofstra

West Virginia returned home on Tuesday night after five games on the road, and looking to extend a nine-game winning streak. The Mountaineers were unable to keep the momentum going in their return home, falling to Hofstra 4-2.

Aidan Major got the start for WVU, going six innings and allowing all four of Hofstra’s runs, with two of them being earned. Major struck out four batters on the night as well.

West Virginia got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, on a JJ Wetherholt single followed by a Dayne Leonard RBI groundout.

Hofstra got a run back in the third inning on a Dylan Palmer single after a WVU throwing error allowed Michael Florides to advance to second on the previous at-bat. Hofstra tied the game in the fourth on a Brian Morrell double, but Major was able to work out of the inning with no more damage.

Hofstra would take the lead in the sixth inning, benefitting from another West VIrginia throwing error, on a Kevin Bruggerman single that saw two Pride score and take a 4-2 lead.

The Pride threatened again in the seventh inning, getting runners on first and third with one out, but Noah Short struck out the next two batters to keep the game 4-2. WVU had a threat of their own in the bottom half of the inning, getting runners on second and third with two outs, but Dayne Leonard grounded out to end the inning.

After a one-two-three eighth inning, West Virginia had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning but Dayne Leonard would strike out to end the game, and the Mountaineers winning streak.

Braden Barry had two hits for WVU, both of which were doubles. JJ Wetherholt and Dayne Leonard had an RBI each to contribute the Mountaineer runs.
