Seeding possibilities for West Virginia in the Big 12 Tournament

Seth Wilson TTU

With one game to play for the remainder of the Big 12, we can begin to see the avenues of who West Virginia could play in the Big 12 Tournament, and where they could be seeded.

7 Seed

This would take the most work in order to happen. Currently West Virginia is 6-11 in the conference and Oklahoma State is 7-10. A Mountaineer win over Kansas State puts them at 7-11, while and Oklahoma State loss on the road to Texas Tech would also put them at 7-11.

Big 12 Tournament tiebreaker scenarios first start at head-to-head record. These two teams split both of their matchups, therefore going to record against the team ranked highest in the standings, and then going down until there is a differentiation. This would favor West Virginia. The top four teams are No. 1 Kansas and then currently a three-way tie for second place between Texas, Baylor, and Kansas State. Oklahoma State is 0-2 against all four of those teams, and if West Virginia were to win on Saturday, they would be 1-1 against Kansas State, and win the tiebreaker.

If this were to happen, the Mountaineers would play Oklahoma at 9:30 p.m. in the 7/10 game on Wednesday, Mar. 8, with the winner facing the No. 2 seed on Thursday (either Texas, Baylor, or Kansas State).

8/9 Seed

West Virginia is currently the eight-seed and this is the easiest outcome to predict. If West Virginia wins, and Oklahoma State wins, West Virginia is the eight-seed. If West Virginia loses, and Texas Tech wins, the Red Raiders would be the eight-seed and West Virginia would be the nine-seed as Texas Tech split with both Kansas State and Texas, therefore being ranked higher than West Virginia.

Either way in either position WVU plays Texas Tech with the winner getting the right to face No. 1 seeded Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament second round.

Current Standings

No. 1 Kansas — Kansas clinched the Big 12 Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed
No. 2 (Tied) Texas, Baylor, Kansas State — if all three teams win or lose, Kansas State would be the two-seed, Texas the three-seed, and Baylor the four-seed. After that, it gets complicated
No. 5 TCU — If TCU wins, they’re the five. If they lose and Iowa State wins, then TCU is the six.
No. 6 Iowa State — A Iowa State win and TCU win keeps Iowa State at the six-seed. An Iowa State win and TCU loss means they flip positions. An Iowa State loss and Oklahoma State win, and the Cyclones are headed to the seven-seed and playing on day one of the Big 12 Tournament.
No. 7 – 9 — We covered those scenarios
No. 10 Oklahoma — Even with a win and Texas Tech loss, Oklahoma will be the 10-seed in the Big 12 Tournament
