On Thursday night, it was announced that former Mountaineers Chuck Howley has earned his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Howley is a member of the 1991 WVU Sports Hall of Fame, after graduating from WVU in 1957. Howley is still the only Mountaineer ever to letter in five sports. Howley competed in track, wrestling, gymnastics and swimming/diving, in addition to football.
Howley was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the 11th pick in the 1958 NFL Draft. Howley was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a seniors candidate. After suffering an injury in his second season, Howley briefly retired from football before returning to West Virginia to play in an alumni game.
After that, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 1961 and would finish his career there until he retired for good in 1973.
Howley, a linebacker for the Cowboys, he was an All-Pro for five consecutive seasons, a six-time Pro Bowler, and he was named the MVP of Super Bowl V, despite the Cowboys losing.
Howley will officially be recognized on Aug. 5, in Canton, Ohio. It was announced at the NFL Honors on Thursday that Howley received the necessary 80 percent of votes to receive his induction.
