The West Virginia Mountaineers (7-4-7, 4-1-4) concluded their regular season at home on Thursday night, defeating the Kansas State Wildcats (6-9-3, 2-5-2) 1-0.
It was two seniors, on senior night who provided the lone goal on the night, when Jordan Brewster passed a free kick into a gap in the Wildcats defense and senior midfielder Julianne Vallerand took the pass and got around Wildcat goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer for the goal.
“We scouted this team a lot and we knew they had a hole in the middle between the wall and the marking players, so me and Jordan said before if we saw an opportunity we were gonna do it, so we saw it and made eye contact and did it,” Vallerand said.
The goal for Vallerand was her third of the season, and the assist for Brewster was her second of the season, as well as Brewster recording her WVU record 96th start for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineer defense was excellent once again, holding Kansas State to just seven shots all match, and only allowing one shot on goal. Kayza Massey saved the one shot she was faced with, keeping the clean sheet.
The goal for the Mountaineers came in the 73rd minute, although they had multiple chances throughout the match, namely a Lauren Segalla breakaway in the 14th minute that was shot directly in the arms of Alaina Werremeyer.
“It’s frustrating for Lauren, it was tough, I know she wanted the first one back in the first half, but she creates so much,” head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said.
