The West Virginia Mountaineers hosted the Kansas Jayhawks for their Big 12 home opener on Friday night, finishing with a 2-2 draw.
The first half finished with a 0-0 tie, but the Mountaineers dominated possession with 62% and generated plenty of scoring opportunities, although they were unable to put any in the back of the net.
The Jayhawks were able to get scoring opportunities on the counter attack, leading the half-time shots nine to eight. Although the Jayhawks were only able to put two shots on target to the Mountaineers four.
The Jayhawks were able to get the best scoring chance of the game so far in the 49th minute when a counter attack led to a one on one with keeper Kayza Massey who was able to charge the ball and get to it before a dangerous shot could be taken.
The Jayhawks would use a counter to take advantage of a high West Virginia defensive line in the 58th minute when they got behind the defense and Rylan Childers was able to put a pass from Lexi Watts past Kayza Massey to give Kansas the first goal of the match.
It wouldn’t take long for Kansas to strike again as they took the ball from the Mountaineers off the kick-off and Shira Elinav put one off the bottom of the crossbar and in 13 seconds after the first goal.
The Mountaineers wouldn’t take long after to answer themselves when a bouncing ball in the middle of the box was put in the back of the net on a header from AJ Rodriguez in the 61st minute.
In the 75th minute the Mountaineers earned a corner and Maya McCutchen was able to connect with the Dilary Heredia-Beltran corner to tie the score at 2-2.
The Mountaineers would finish the game with 16 shots to the Jayhawks 12, with 10 shots on to Kansas’ 4.
