Before eventually landing at West Virginia, Mountaineer quarterback JT Daniels previously played at two schools — USC and Georgia.
While at USC, Daniels had the opportunity to play with many current NFL wide receivers. The receivers Daniels played with at USC included current Indianapolis Colt Michael Pittman, Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Atlanta Falcons receiver Drake London. Daniels also played with the likes of George Pickens of the Pittsburgh Steelers at Georgia last season.
It’s safe to say Daniels has seen some talent at the wide receiver position, but on Monday, he compared current West Virginia wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton to his former teammate St. Brown.
Through just three games, Ford-Wheaton has 24 catches for 296 yards and four touchdowns. His 296 yards rank 23rd in the country, while he ranks 10th in the country in receptions per game with 8.0.
Daniels said he sees comparisons between Ford-Wheaton and St. Brown when it comes to the preparation and mental side of the game with knowing what to do.
“It’s a huge help. I’ve had that everywhere I’ve been especially with Amon-Ra St. Brown,” Daniels said. “Bryce’s mentals remind me a little bit of Amon. Me and Amon were the same exact way where we saw the game the same and understood it really well. I think I had that with George (Pickens) and Pittman.”
Daniels said he is reminded a lot of St. Brown the young Lions receiver who this past Sunday had nine receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
“Bryce specifically reminds me a lot of Amon in the way one, he approaches during preparation but two I can tell Bryce something in between a play and we’ll run it the next play and he’ll get it and it will click instantly,” Daniels said.
St. Brown was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, with the 112th overall pick.
