The West Virginia Mountaineers (3-3-3) headed to Georgetown to take on Georgetown (4-1-3). The Mountaineers were shut out for the third straight match, ultimately losing 2-0.
West Virginia was able to generate shots, having 13 in the match, but only getting 4 on target. Georgetown was able to break down the usually stout West Virginia defense, getting 12 shots and 6 on target.
The scoring was opened in the 33rd minute when Georgetown’s Tatum Lenain slotted one in the top left corner past Mountaineers keeper Kayza Massey.
This would be the only scoring of the first half, as the teams would head to the half with Georgetown leading 1-0. Both teams had four shots in the first half, each with two on target.
It wouldn’t take long after the break for Georgetown to increase their lead, when in the 48th minute, Gia Vicari put Georgetown on the board again with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Mountaineers would have their best chances in the second half, generating nine shots in the frame. Their best opportunity came in the 68th minute, when West Virginia was able to draw the Hoyas keeper off her line and Maya McCutchen got a shot on net that had to be saved by a Georgetown defender out of play for a corner. Off the corner Chloe Anderson was able to get a head on the ball but sent it over the bar.
The Mountaineers will head to Lubbock, Texas for their conference opener against Texas Tech in their next match on Thursday.
