Lance Dixon readying to become a key piece to the WVU defense

Lance Dixon didn’t always call WVU home. Before coming to Morgantown in 2021, he played for Penn State in 2019 and 2020. At the linebacker position, he played in nine games including one start for the Nittany Lions back in 2020. He ended the season with 10 tackles and seven solo stops.

When Dixon transferred to WVU in the summer of 2021, he would see a boost in his playing time. He played in a total of 10 games and started four. In that time frame he would be a part of 399 snaps and 328 defensive snaps.

In the Guaranteed Rate Bowl last December, he would go on to put up a season best 11 tackles against Minnesota’s offense.

Last year, Dixon played alongside starting linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo, who has transferred to the University of Colorado. This has opened the door for Dixon to share the field with linebacker Lee Kpogba, and together they will try to help keep WVU’s reputation as one of the best defensive teams in the country.

Dixon is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker who uses his physical stature and long arms to his advantage when facing down offensive opponents.

Last Saturday, Dixon mentioned how he’s using his body to his advantage.

“I have long arms, I’m able to extend out on the offensive lineup,” Dixon said.

Dixon also brought up how the defense can improve on being able to have in-game knowledge.

“Knowing more stuff, knowing as much as the coach so you can be a coach on the field, like a part time coach on the field and if the whole defense is at that level then we got eleven quarterbacks out there,” Dixon said.

On Tuesday, head coach Neal Brown mentioned how pleased he was with how Dixon has come along during fall practice.

“Lance Dixon was really active and he’s had a good four, five days, his best stretch as a Mountaineer really from a consistency standpoint.”

With the start of the college football season right around the corner, all of Dixon’s preparation and hard work he put into the offseason will be put to the test and he will be able to show that he can be a bright spot for this year’s Mountaineer defense.
