On Tuesday night at the Charleston Civic Center, there will be a lot of blue and gold, but also a lot of green. The two largest schools in the state of West Virginia each have an alumni team, and those two teams are set to face each other with a trip to the regional final on the line.
Best Virginia did not experience many issues in their round one game against Virginia Dream. Best Virginia shot 41% from the field, led by Kevin Jones who had 18 points and eight rebounds. Best Virginia’s defense was also on full display in their victory, forcing 14 turnovers, which led to 20 points, in their 75-45 win.
Herd That — Marshall University’s alumni team had to fight a little harder than Best Virginia did for their victory. Herd That beat Founding Fathers 77-71, led by James Kelly who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Herd That would go into the Elam Ending portion of the game tied at 69. Herd That would allow only one basket, while making a pair of three-pointers to seal their win.
On Monday, Best Virginia’s John Flowers who scored 10 points in the win Sunday night had a few choice words to say about Herd That.
“The Herd don’t have any alumni,” Flowers said. “Ot Elmore retired like five years ago. There’s no competition, we’re going to kill them.”
Flowers and company will hope this is not a repeat of last summer, where Best Virginia lost in the regional semi-finals, where they lost 75-67 to Team 23 a year ago.
Best Virginia and Herd That are set to get going at 8:00 p.m., with the game being televised on ESPN3.
