WVU picked to finish 8th in preseason Big 12 poll

As West Virginia head coach Neal Brown enters his fourth season at the helm for the Mountaineers, his team continues to be picked towards the bottom of the Big 12. 

On Thursday, the Big 12 Football Media Preseason Poll was released and had West Virginia picked to finish eighth. Baylor, who won the Big 12 Championship a season ago was picked to finish first in the league with 17 first place votes. 

Oklahoma who features new head coach Brent Venables was picked a close second behind the Bears, snapping a six year streak of them being picked to finish atop the league. Following Oklahoma was Oklahoma State who lost to Baylor in last year’s Big 12 Championship game. 

Texas was picked to finish fourth behind the Cowboys, and Kansas State rounds out the top five. Iowa State was picked to finishs sixth in the conference and recieved one first place vote. TCU was picked seventh with 149 points, while the Mountaineers were picked to finish eigth with 147 points in the poll. 

To finish, Texas Tech and Kansas were selected ninth and tenth in the conference. 

West Virginia features transfer quarterback JT Daniels, replacing two-year starter Jarrett Doege at the position. The Mountaineers also return key contributors Dante Stills and Charles Woods on the defensive side of the ball. West Virginia opens their season on Thursday, Sept. 1 on the road against Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.
