With spring practices coming to a close, head coach Neal Brown has named a few standouts that have impressed him over the last few weeks. One of those standouts is Sean Martin, a West Virginia native who has improved his game over the last year, making him a special aspect to the Mountaineer defense.
Martin is from Bluefield, West Virginia, a town on the southern tip of the state. Martin has been a fan-favorite since his commitment in 2019 due to his dedication to the state of West Virginia and Mountaineer football.
The 6’5” West Virginia native has been regarded as a standout since he came into the program; head coach Neal Brown was impressed with Martin’s work ethic as soon as he stepped on the practice field.
Although Martin didn’t see many snaps his first year, his off-season efforts put him into the defensive rotation for the 2021 season.
Martin went from 260 pounds entering his freshman year to an impressive 280 pounds leading up to the 2021 season. Martin’s added strength was clear in the 2021 season as he exceled in the defensive end position after making the switch from defensive tackle.
In the 2021 season, Martin saw action in all 13 games. He was utilized in 275 snaps for the Mountaineers, including 212 on defense. Martin finished with 16 tackles and also had a fumble recovery against LIU.
On top of his athletic success, Martin excels in the classroom, making the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the 2021 season.
As the spring game is set to kick-off on Saturday, April 23, be sure to look out for the West Virginia native on the defensive line. Martin is sure to impress as he looks to have a successful redshirt sophomore season for the Mountaineers.
