Former West Virginia tight end Anthony Becht was selected as head coach for the XFL as they resume competition in 2023.
The league shortened its 2020 season due to COVID-19, and Becht will be head coach for one of the eight XFL franchises of the relaunch.
Becht was an offensive standout for WVU from 1996-1999. During his career as a Mountaineer, Becht caught 83 passes for 1,1178 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He was named WVU’s MVP of the 1999 season.
Becht was a first-round draft pick to the New York Jets in 2000, going 27th overall. He also played for the Buccaneers, Rams, Cardinals and Chiefs before retiring from the league after 12 years. During his professional career, he earned 21 receiving touchdowns and totaled 1,537 yards.
Following his professional career, Becht served as a commentator for ESPN and worked as a radio analyst covering the Buccaneers and the Jets.
Becht’s new XFL position is not his first experience in coaching; in 2018, he was the tight end coach for the San Diego Fleet, a professional franchise of the Alliance of American Football. Becht also coached the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, working with the top-rated college tight ends.
The XFL is set to kick off in February 2023. According to an official statement by the XFL, additional information about teams and venues will be announced in the coming months.
