Hampton leads WVU baseball win in game two against Campbell

The Mountaineers bounced back from a game one loss to beat the Fighting Camels 6-3 in game two of the series in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
Sophomore Ben Hampton had an impressive performance on the mound for WVU, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs.
The Mountaineers struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning. McGwire Holbrook doubled to center field, advancing Austin Davis home. Braden Barry sent Holbrook home with an RBI single.
To add to the Mountaineers’ momentum at the plate, Tevin Tucker homered to left field in the top of the second inning.
Hampton held Campbell scoreless in the third and fourth innings. The Mountaineers were also quiet, going three up, three down in both innings.
The Fighting Camels put one on the board in the fifth inning with a homerun given up by Hampton on two outs. The Mountaineers still held the lead of 3-1 going into the sixth.
The Mountaineers continued their success at the plate in the sixth inning, scoring an additional two runs. Pinch hitter Kevin Dowdell walked and stole his way around the bases, scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Alex Khan. Khan’s bunt brought in two runs.
Wild pitches from Hampton gave the Fighting Camels base runners in the bottom of the sixth, but the Mountaineers finished the inning up three runs at 5-2.
Tucker scored for the Mountaineers in the top of the seventh, and Hampton finished a successful inning for the Mountaineers on the mound, allowing no hits.
Chase Smith came in to relieve Hampton in the eighth inning, striking out his first batter and holding Campbell scoreless.
In the final inning, Mikey Kluska singled to center but was left on base. The Fighting Camels’ efforts at the plate earned them another run, but they could not come back against the Mountaineers. WVU took the win, 6-3.
Hampton earned the away win, marking his fourth win of the season.
The Mountaineers look to win game three of the series at Jim Perry Stadium on March 20 at 1:00p.m.
