WVU Falls to Marshall in Extras, Snapping Winning Streak

West Virginia lost to Marshall 3-2 in 11 innings in Huntington on Wednesday, snapping their four-game winning streak.

The Mountaineers have previously won eight straight against Marshall dating back to April 14, 2021. They defeated the Thundering Herd 11-2 in Charleston on March 12 and 15-0 on March 20 in Morgantown this season.

West Virginia got six hits in the contest, leaving nine men on base and made two errors. While, Marshall picked up nine hits and also left nine men on base.

WVU used seven pitchers in the loss with Gavin Van Kempen getting the starting nod. He pitched 3.2 innings allowing three hits and walked two batters while striking out four. Freshman Chase Meyer got the loss, coming in to pitch in the 12th, allowing the walk-off single.

West Virginia struck first with Grant Hussey hitting a solo home run to make it 1-0 in the top of the second. It was quiet in the middle innings, but then the Thundering Herd tied it up in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Tre Hondras, but in the top of the seventh, Logan Sauve hit an RBI single with two outs to give the Mountaineers the lead back.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Marshall was threatening with a leadoff single by Cam Harthan. Harthan was advanced on a sacrifice bunt and later came around to score on a throwing error by Hussey, attempting to turn a double to end the game.

Neither team would reach base in the 10th, but in the 11th WVU began the inning with back-to-back walks. Both runners would later get out on the basepath, both being caught in a pickle after a pickoff attempt. Marshall would pick up a couple of base runners in the 11th, with the first caught stealing. After walking, a runner would advance to second on an error on a pickoff attempt, before being advanced to third on a single. A walk-off single by Caden Kaiser would give Marshall the 3-2 win.

West Virginia drops to 19-13 overall and Marshall improves to 12-19. The Mountaineers will begin a three-game series with UCF on Friday as they look to continue to improve in the Big 12.
