West Virginia Named A Projected Regional Host Site

As of Wednesday afternoon, both “D1 Baseball” and “Baseball America” have West Virginia on their list as a projected host site for the “NCAA College Baseball World Series Regional”.

Should they be selected as a host, this will be the third time the Mountaineers have hosted the regional round here in Morgantown, and the second time potentially hosting the regional round of play at “Kendrick Family Ballpark.”

In 2019, the Mountaineers hosted the NCAA Regional for the first time since 1955, finishing the season 38–22 and ranked No. 21 nationally. The last time the Mountaineers hosted, they played three different matchups. They won their first matchup against the Fordham Rams in a dominant 6-2 victory. However, that is where the success for the Mountaineers ended as they lost their next game to the Duke Blue Devils 0-4 and the 17th-ranked Texas A and M Aggies 10-11.

Both sources have the Mountaineers hosting potential competition such as Oklahoma and Kentucky from the SEC, Miami and Duke from the ACC, George Mason from the A10, and finally Ball State from the MAC. The toughest competition the Mountaineers face on this list would be the Oklahoma Sooners, who are currently the 14th-ranked team in the country. The Sooners boast victories over the now No. 3 ranked Oregon State Beavers, the formerly No. 2 ranked Virginia Cavaliers, the former No. 21 ranked Dallas Baptist Patriots, and conference rivals such as the Alabama Crimson Tide and Vanderbilt Commodores, who both recently dropped out of the top twenty-five..
