Mountaineers shoot best round at Big 12 Championship

West Virginia remains in a less than ideal position at the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship this week, but after jumping Baylor in the standings, hope remains for a decent end to the season.

The Mountaineers finished their first two rounds 22 strokes over and 20 strokes over par respectively on Tuesday, putting them in 14th after day one. The start was a far cry from WVU’s program-best fifth-place finish last season in Texas, aligning with an underwhelming tournament season this spring.

On Wednesday, however, WVU showed glimpses of its breakout year, golfing a score of 10-over-par for round three. The score was ninth best for the round and allowed the Mountaineers to jump Baylor for 13th place overall.

Senior Todd Duncan helped pilot WVU’s success in 2024, and his veteran experience showed in the third round, where he golfed a 67 (-3) to be the only Mountaineer under par. Duncan is now at splits of 74-77-67 (+8), tying him for 18th among all golfers.

Senior Max Green and junior Kaleb Wilson also golfed at the conference championship last season. Wilson shot better of the two on Wednesday, golfing three-over-par on the front nine and even on the back for his best round of the week. Green golfed six-over-par for the day, making for his second best round behind his +1 finish in round two.

Junior Westy McCabe sits three strokes behind Green for the week after golfing four-over-par for the third round. Junior Carson Kammann rounds out the Mountaineer scores significantly behind the rest, at +11 for the round +31 for the week, putting him in last place among all golfers.

West Virginia kicks off its final round in Tulsa, Oklahoma as Kammann tees off at 10 a.m. ET. One Mountaineer will tee off in each of the following flights, spread out 12 minutes apart.
