Rich Rodriguez speaks again on depth of current roster

In Rich Rodriguez’s last press conference, he touched on how he felt the current state of the roster was. He did not have a lot of good things to say, and it raised questions among WVU fans who have high hopes for the upcoming season.

Earlier today Rodriguez touched on what he meant earlier in the week, drawing attention to a much easier problem to fix.

“I think there was a misunderstanding that I was unhappy with the roster. I am unhappy with the depth, but I think every coach is unhappy with their depth at this point in the spring,” Rodriguez said.

With just over two weeks until the second transfer portal opens, it is important for Rodriguez and the rest of the coaching staff to make sure every position group is talented top to bottom. Rodriguez hinted at a lot of this talent still coming from the transfer portal.

“We do have to increase our competition at most of our positions. I hope it comes from a lot of guys within, but inevitably it’s probably going to come from guys that aren’t here yet,” Rodriguez said. “With only two starters back there are question marks because you just don’t know even if they played at the other schools,” he added.

West Virginia currently has 59 new faces on their spring roster, making it the most out of any FBS team in the country. Rich Rodriguez is an experienced coach with an experienced coaching staff that knows exactly what they are looking for in a player and the team.

“You have to be honest with your players and tell them where they stand all of the time. We tell them where they are at in the depth chart. We tell them what they need to work on,” Rodriguez said.

The Mountaineers will have one more week of spring practice before the final step of evaluating talent in the spring showcase. It is set to take place on Apr. 5 at 1 p.m. ET.
