Now that it has been almost three days since Darian DeVries announced his departure from Morgantown, more candidates have emerged to take his spot.
Jerrod Calhoun
Calhoun, who is currently the head coach at Utah State, has already had experience in Morgantown. From 2007-2012 Calhoun was an assistant for West Virginia under Bob Huggins. Following his time in Morgantown, he stayed local and was named head coach at Fairmont State on the Division II level. After having a record of 124-38 at Fairmont State, Calhoun earned his first Division I head coaching job at Youngstown State. He was able to turn a struggling Youngstown State program around, going 22-10 his last season there. In his first year at Utah State this season, he led the Big Blue to a 26-7 record and a NCAA Tournament appearance as a No. 10 seed.
Scott Cross
Scott Cross is the current head coach of the 23-10 Troy Trojans. Cross brought the Trojans to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history this year. Before being at Troy, Cross was the head coach at UT Arlington from 2006-2018 and an assistant at TCU from 2018-2019. In his six years at Troy, Cross has accumulated a record of 103-86 and has had four consecutive 20-win seasons. With Cross signing an extension last year, getting him to Morgantown will be challenging, but it is possible.
Ross Hodge
Hodge, who has been the head coach at North Texas since 2023, has shown his coaching potential early. Hodge has had assistant jobs at Southern Mississippi, Colorado State and Arkansas State, before joining North Texas’s staff in 2017. Before he was named head coach for the Mean Green, he was the associate head coach for six seasons. As head coach, he has a record of 43-23, going 25-8 this season. Hodge and Wren Baker worked together at North Texas when Hodge was hired.
Being in the same position he was in last season; it is likely we will find out the next Mountaineer head coach sooner rather than later. Many candidates that Wren Baker is looking into are the same guys that came up as candidates last season.
