WVU baseball defeated Towson earlier today by the run rule to earn their 15th victory of the season by a score of 16-5.
Sophomore Spencer Barnett led the way for the Mountaineers with a monster game. He finished with two home runs and five RBIs on the day. This was a team effort for WVU, who is showing they are one of the most dangerous teams in the country.
An error by Towson and a fly-out by Gavin Kelly made the score 3-0 Mountaineers early in the first inning. Then a single by Skylar King in the same inning brought the lead to 4-0 going into the second inning.
Kyle West got things going in the second inning for the Mountaineers with a double into center field to bring in another run. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk by the Tigers and another fielding error made the score 7-0 Mountaineers.
Steve Sabins began to pull West Virginia starters in the third inning, including pitcher Chase Meyer, who had an excellent two innings with three strikeouts.
Later in the fourth inning, the scoring for WVU continued as Gavin Kelly doubled into center field. Then a ground by Ben Lumsden brought West Virginia’s lead to 9-0.
After two runs by Towson in the sixth inning, Spencer Barnett hit his first home run in the beginning of the seventh inning to make the score 11-2 WVU.
Three runs from Towson in the eighth inning brought the deficit to 6, but a Spencer Barnett walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the same inning ended the game for the Mountaineers.
After coach Steve Sabins took out Brodie Kresser to rest and inserted Barnett into the first batter position, he shined. WVU will have another day to two days to rest before a highly anticipated series with Oklahoma State this weekend.
The first game will begin on Mar. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at O’Brate Stadium.
