West Virginia baseball continued their hot streak in an 11-7 victory earlier today over Queens. The win improves the Mountaineers to 10-0 on the season.
WVU got the scoring started with a Jace Rinehart RBI single to make it 1-0 Mountaineers early in thr first inning.
Queens responded quickly with a solo home run by Anibal Rivera in the bottom of the inning. Good base running and two RBI singles by Lenox Lively and Justin Hudson brought in three more runs. WVU now found themselves in the biggest hole of the season thus far, down 4-1 going into the second inning.
The Mountaineers came out in the second with a sense of urgency. Brodie Kresser started things off with a double to bring in two runs for the Mountaineers. Later in the inning a few wild pitches and good base running allowed the Mountaineers to score three more runs, putting them up 6-4.
Armani Guzman stole the show in the third inning with a long solo home-run to right field. After a slow season last year Guzman has found his stride so far this season. Another RBI single by Jace Rinehart in that third inning made the score 8-4 Mountaineers.
Queens was able to find three more runs in the third and fourth innings to make the score 8-7 Mountaineers.
With the game on the line head coach Steve Sabins put in junior right-hander Carson Estridge, and he did not disappoint. Estridge finished the game by pitching 5.2 innings with 0 runs and only three hits allowed.
The big day from Estridge and three more runs in the eighth inning allowed the Mountaineers to finish with an 11-7 victory.
Brodie Kresser continued his hot hand today. He finished 3 for 5 with two RBI’s and a .412 batting average. The Mountaineers also got a huge contribution from transfer Jace Rinehart. Rinehart ended the day 3 for 4 with two RBI’s and a .438 batting average.
The Mountaineers will look to keep their undefeated season alive tomorrow. They will play Queens in the third game of their four-game set at 2:00 p.m ET.
