The No. 18 West Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Cincinnati with a score of 85-69 in the final game of their regular season.
While the Bearcats got on the board first, the Mountaineers quickly responded. Down for just two minutes in the beginning of the first quarter, West Virginia took the lead and didn’t lose their momentum. Putting up 20 points, they shot 40% both from the field and behind the arc and 100% from the free-throw line.
Under two minutes into the second quarter, Cincinnati was able to move the score gap to just six points challenging the Mountaineers. They were unable to inch any closer before getting shut down by the West Virginia defense. The Bearcats had just two points in the paint and suffered no second chance points. The Mountaineers moved their lead to 14 points finishing the half.
Jordan Harrison put on a stellar performance in the third quarter adding nine points to her total of 21. Six of those points came from threes. The fourth quarter looked no different for the Mountaineers who went on a 9-0 run two minutes into the final moments of the game. West Virginia shot 40.9% from the field and 47.1% behind the arc.
JJ Quinerly led the way for the Mountaineers finishing with a total of 31 points. At the conclusion of the second half, Quinerly tallied 24 points, over half of her team’s total of 44.
Cincinnati’s Jillian Hayes led her team with 20 points total along with eight rebounds and three assists.
West Virginia moves to 23-6 on the season (13-5 in Big 12). Big 12 Tournament play begins this Wednesday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, MO.
