After a long four-game set with Lipscomb last weekend, the Mountaineers took care of business today in their home opener against Ohio by a score of 8-4.
Sam White opened things up for the Mountaineers with a double in the first inning to make the score 1-0. In the same inning, a double by Kyle West drove in two more runs, making the score 3-0.
The Bobcats were held scoreless through three innings thanks to the pitching of freshman Mac Stiffler. Due to the four games over the weekend, WVU’s bullpen was tested today. All three starters were out due to rest.
Sophomore Michael Perazza singled in the third inning to make the score 4-0 for the Mountaineers. Ohio was able to get on the board in the fourth inning with a fly-out and good base running making the score 4-2.
In tthe fourth inning, Logan Sauve responded with an RBI single, making the score 5-2 entering the 5th inning. Grant Hussey was able to get something going in the sixth inning with his 38th career home run into left field to make the score 6-3. This was huge for Hussey who has been struggling with the bat so far this season.
Another single by Sauve in the sixth inning and a fly-out by Brodie Kresser in the seventh inning allowed the Mountaineers to take an 8-3 lead. Tyler Hutson closed the game on the mound for WVU, helping the team secure their eighth victory of the season.
Logan Sauve led the way for the Mountaineers today. He batted 2 for 4 with a .353 average and two RBIs. Armani Guzman and Kyle West also had big days for WVU. Guzman batted 2 for 4 with a .353 average, while West batted a .316 average with two RBIs.
This has been a great start to the year for the Mountaineers, who have begun the season 8-0 for the first time since 1964 under first-year head coach Steve Sabins. They will look to continue this success on Friday, Feb. 28 as they take on Queens at 6:30 p.m. ET.
