Steve Sabins expresses excitement following three-game sweep

The West Virginia baseball team traveled south this weekend to open their season against Jacksonville. The Mountaineers returned to Morgantown 3-0 and new head coach Steve Sabins had nothing but good things to say about his team.

“I was proud of the team. I thought they played free and aggressive,” Sabins said. “Baseball is a skill sport and so oftentimes that opening weekend with young guys, they put a lot of pressure on themselves and try to over perform and do more than what their training has taught them.”

West Virginia left Florida with stacked stats and impressed fans. With on point pitching and consistent hitting, the Mountaineers were able to start their season with three wins for just the second time in 13 seasons.

“Game one, which I think we ended up winning by two runs, that was probably our best game, really,” Sabins said. “We truly outperformed Jacksonville in game one.”

The Mountaineers out-hit the Dolphins by ten hits, had four stolen bases, and excellent starting pitching by redshirt senior Griffin Kirn, who went 5.2 innings giving up only one hit.

Being in his first year as head coach, Sabins shared the process of coaching is something he loves.

“When you’re doing something that you really love, the time passes really quickly,” Sabins said. “It’s borderline meditation in-game.”

The Mountaineers will travel to Nashville next weekend to take on Lipscomb in a three-game series. The Bison are 1-1 following their season opener series against Kentucky.
