West Virginia Baseball defeated Jacksonville in the first game of their double header earlier today by a score of 10-3. The win puts the Mountaineers up 2-0 in the four-game series between the teams this weekend.
Skylar King started the scoring with a two-run triple in the second inning to put WVU up 2-0. After two RBI singles from Brodie Kresser and Logan Sauve, the score moved to 4-0.
The scoring continued with redshirt freshman Alex Marot’s first career hit putting the Mountaineers up 6-0, still in the second inning. After some great pitching from both teams and a couple of hits by Jacksonville, the score was 6-3 heading into the seventh inning.
Skylar King continued to shine in that seventh inning. His single into right field was his third RBI of the day, and it gave the Mountaineers a commanding 8-3 lead. Two more singles by Logan Sauve and freshman Jorge Valdes in the eighth inning put the Mountaineers up 10-3 and finished what was a team effort for WVU.
The pitching of West Virginia looked great today. They were led by Carson Estridge, a key piece in their tournament run past season. Estridge pitched 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and zero runs allowed. He will be a key piece for the Mountaineers this season.
West Virginia will play Jacksonville for the second game of the doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. They are looking to go up 3-0 in the series.
