True freshman guard Jonathan Powell has been a huge piece of the Mountaineers rotation, giving significant contributions night in and night out.
Powell is averaging almost 26 minutes played per game, posting good shooting percentages from the floor and from three. On 113 attempts, Powell has shot 40.7% from the field so far this season, alongside a 37.9% clip from three on 87 attempts.
He is averaging 9.2 points per game, 2.2 rebounds and 0.6 assists. He has played in every single game for the Mountaineers, scoring 17 points in one game, twice this season.
Since the injury to star guard Tucker DeVries, who stands just an inch taller than the 6-foot-6, 191-pound Powell, coach Darian DeVries has trusted a starting role to Powell.
Powell earned the starting job with a career-best 17 points and four assists to go with four rebounds against North Carolina Central. In 29 minutes off the bench, Powell took a high volume of shots, going 6-for-14 from the field and 4-for-11 from three.
In five games as a starter, Powell averages 31.8 minutes per game with heightened offensive production, including three games with double-digit scoring.
Against Oklahoma State, Powell matched his career high of 17 points in a more efficient manner, going 5-for-7 from three and 6-for-10 from the field.
In the recent loss to Arizona, Powell and the Mountaineers struggled, shooting just four three-point attempts in 29 minutes and scoring eight points. Against Colorado, he will likely want to return to his high volume, confident offensive play.
Powell hopes to continue success and improve in certain areas, on the road playing Colorado on Sunday.
