Neal Brown spent seasons with UMass, Sacred Heart, Delaware, Texas Tech, Kentucky, and Troy before landing the head coaching position with the Mountaineers in 2019. Since his first season six years ago, he holds an overall record of 37-35 (25-28 in the Big 12) with two winning seasons.
Brown made it to three bowl games during his time with the Mountaineers. West Virginia beat Army in the Liberty Bowl during Brown’s second season in 2020. The following year, in 2021, West Virginia fell to Minnesota in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. In the most recent bowl, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, the Mountaineers came out on top over UNC.
West Virginia remains bowl-eligible this season and will be coached by offensive coordinator/runningback coach Chad Scott.
Brown has coached 23 players who made it to the NFL, including nine Mountaineers. One of the most recent and most notable was Zach Frazier, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers 51st overall in the 2024 draft.
Brown will be owed $9.775 million to cover the final three years of his contract. A national search is underway to find WVU’s new head coach.
