DeVries and Small remain focused on Bahamas tournament

The West Virginia Men’s Basketball team traveled to the Bahamas Monday evening to play in the Battle 4 Atlantis Thanksgiving tournament starting Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers will see No. 3 Gonzaga in the second matchup of the day.

In a press conference held Tuesday in the Bahamas, seniors Tucker DeVries and Javon Small were asked what their favorite part of the trip had been so far.

“The dinner was pretty good last night for sure but the biggest thing is we are coming down here to compete and win some games, so trying to stay focused and you know you can enjoy the scenery a little bit, but we’re here to play basketball,” said DeVries.

“I would say my favorite thing so far is probably just running into old teammates or friends, but this is definitely more of a business trip than us being on vacation and I think everyone knows that,” said Small.

DeVries reflected on Gonzaga as being “balanced” and having players who can move the ball extremely well. He said it is important for the Mountaineer defense to be aggressive.

Small shared it is important to just take the tournament one game at a time instead of worrying about future games when the opponent isn’t finalized.

To start the season Gonzaga is undefeated at 5-0, while the Mountaineers have one loss leaving them with a record of 3-1. West Virginia will take on the Bulldogs at 2:30 EST.
