Three Mountaineers spoke to the media after West Virginia’s 87-59 season-opening victory against Robert Morris.
The players—Amani Hansberry, Javon Small and Tucker DeVries—shared their thoughts on the team’s performance and areas for improvement ahead of Friday’s game against UMass.
“A lot of things to clean up. You know, we’ll hit that tomorrow and the next few days to prepare for Friday, but for the most part, I think we did a good job,” Hansberry said of the team’s playing style.
WVU got off to a fast start. They scored 21 points before Robert Morris recorded a single score
“I think the first 10 minutes, we did exactly what we’re capable of. There was a little bit of a lull, kind of similar to Charleston, but I think there were still bits and pieces after the first 10 minutes that looked great,” DeVries said.
Also speaking on the fast start, Small spoke of the team’s mentality during that early stretch.
“Just keep playing hard, no let-up. Keep your foot on the gas,” Small said.
Small, who transferred from Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State to finish his collegiate career in Morgantown, was asked about any differences in closing out on defense.
“No, I think it was similar,” he said. “I think guys are just a little bit more bought into what we want to do, and we just play hard on both ends.”
All three players contributed heavily to the Mountaineers’ win, posting solid numbers on both sides of the ball.
West Virginia will face UMass at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
