Neal Brown Previews Kansas State Matchup

Saturday, West Virginia hosts No. 17 Kansas State as they look to bounce back.

After a 31-28 victory over Colorado last weekend, the Wildcats are 5-1 (2-1 in Big 12) this season. WVU head coach gave insight into the upcoming matchup, sensing familiarity between K-State and Iowa State.

“I think they’re very similar in their style and approach to Iowa State. They’re tough, physical really disciplined football team,” Brown said. “They’re used to winning and they’ve had success on the road as well. And so they won their last time here. I think coach Klieman and his staff do a really nice job in all phases.”

In 2022 it was a 48-31 loss for West Virginia when they hosted Kansas State, ranked No. 15 at the time. Talking about the Wildcats offense, Brown highlighted their rushing attack.

“Offensively they first and foremost, they want to run the football they’re leading our [conference] right now in rushing offense,” Brown said. “They’re multiple. They shift, they motion play a bunch of different tight ends. I think (DJ) Giddens is playing extremely well.”

Giddens, Kansas State’s runningback, has 786 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns so far this season. Overall, the Wildcats have 1,446 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground through six games thus far.

Brown noted the talent and pro potential of their offensive line, which may pay huge dividends in their rushing attack.

“O-line, I think they’re very, very well coached, do a nice job. They got a couple NFL players up there. They do a great job communicating they’re on the right people,” Brown said.

Flipping to defense, Brown says that K-State also does a good job stopping the run and mentions personnel at cornerback being a strength of theirs.

“They’re playing at a high level,” Brown said of Kansas State’s defense. “Best rushing defense in the [Big12]. I think they’re what 79 yards rushing, so they’re getting after people in the run game. And they’re talented at corner, really talented at corner (they) play a lot of man coverage.”

Brown sees the Kansas State game as an opportunity to bounce back after the disappointing outcome against Iowa State.

“The good thing is when you have disappointing performance, man, you’re able to come back out and play and we got another quality opponent coming in here on a Saturday night,” Brown said.

Kickoff for Saturday is set for 7:30 p.m. EST, with the game being televised to FOX.
