Lance Leipold Discusses What He Sees from West Virginia, Credits Brown

Preparing for the week four matchup and first conference game, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold spoke on what he sees from the Mountaineers.

The Jayhawks are in a very similar situation as West Virginia. Both teams are 1-2 and coming off losses in tightly contested affairs.

“Team that’s been through a tough schedule so far, two rivalry games had a tough one on Saturday,” Leipold said of the Mountaineers.

Leipold and Kansas last played WVU in 2022. At the time, JT Daniels was West Virginia’s quarterback, but Leipold was still aware of Garett Greene. He spoke on Greene and other threats in the Mountaineers offense.

“Two years ago or whenever it was we played them. Greene got a little bit of playing time at that (time). I think they just started to feed him in a little bit in some situations. He’s a talented quarterback who can create plays with his feet,” Leipold said. “They got a big (running) back and then they got quick backs. They got some athletic tight ends with some great length, and they motion them around a little bit like we do. They find ways to get them the ball.”

With both teams in the current state that they are, Leipold noted that this will be a test for his squad. Ultimately, he said he expects an exciting game.

“This will be a very good test for us in a lot of different ways. And they’re a team that has been close and feels they need to get a win, and so do we, so it should be a lot of excitement in Morgantown,” Leipold said.

Continuing to look at West Virginia from the outside in, Leipold credited Neal Brown, having not only played him in the Big 12, but when he was at Buffalo and Brown was at Troy. The Trojans defeated the Bulls in the 2018 DollarGeneral Bowl 42-32.

“I’ve said it before: Neal Brown’s an outstanding coach, (I) have a lot of respect for him, told him that. When we were both at our former jobs we had a chance to go against each other,” Leipold said. “He’s an outstanding offensive mind and a very fine head coach, and he’s going to have that team up bouncing back, and we intend to do the same.”

Kansas vs. West Virginia kicks off from Morgantown at noon EST on Saturday. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
