In a press conference Friday, West Virginia quarterbacks coach Tyler Allen spoke about what he’s worked on with Garrett Greene and the improvements he made overall.

“Garrett, one thing we’ve really been focusing on this summer is his touch. We really drilled it a lot and it’s really showing up in the span of the last 13-14 practices,” Allen said. “Really good touch when he’s on the move too, like outside the pocket and he’s really improved on that.”

Greene is always a threat in the run game, but this summer he’s worked on refining his throwing and getting good touch on the ball to get it out to his receivers. In his junior season in 2023, he threw for 2,406 yards and 16 touchdowns, but has struggled with accuracy completing less than 53% of his passes.

“In January we sat down and really watched all the throws from last year, there was a ton of things we needed to improve for him(Greene) throwing downhill to make his completion percentage better,” Allen said. “I went back two days ago and looked at his numbers from fall camp last year and fall camp this year. I’m not giving exact numbers but it’s a significant improvement in completion percentage, so hopefully that transitions into two weeks from now. So a lot of that was his footwork and touch and some mechanical issues where he was falling off but we got him grounded now.”

In the press conference, Allen emphasized that West Virginia wants Greene to play ‘free’ due to his natural ability to go out and make a play. The staff doesn’t want Greene to play totally conservative and limit playmaking ability.

“We want him to go play free, so if he can’t see or it’s not there we want him to go play because that’s where a lot of his big plays come from on scrambles,” Allen said. “You gotta be careful because you don’t want to take that away from him, because that’s what makes him a great player, his ability to play free. So, you don’t want to take that away from him, but at the same you have to teach him when to take risks and when not to take risks.”

On top of physical play, Greene has also improved mentally, in his composure and decision-making. As a senior and now a veteran of college football he will always need to keep his head in the game, especially as the team’s quarterback.

“That’s one big improvement he’s made. He’s more level-headed now. We try to say all the time, we want to play with emotion not emotional and he’s come a long way. He’s way more level-headed now and controlled and he can make those decisions at a faster rate and he’s done really well with that.”
