As the 2024 college football season approaches, here’s a look at who could become a household name by season’s end. Our other predicted breakout candidates can be found here and here.
Nicco Marchiol
Marchiol, the redshirt sophomore and backup to Garrett Greene at quarterback, represents a high-upside breakout candidate for WVU, though his opportunity to shine depends on if he sees significant playing time this season. Having spent the last two seasons honing his skills and learning the intricacies of the offense, Marchiol is prepared to step in and make an impact if called upon. At 6’2” with a solid arm and great mobility, he has the physical attributes to excel in both the passing and running games – similarly to Greene. In the unlikely situation where Marchiol needs to take over, his experience in the Mountaineers offensive system could lead to a breakout performance.
Reid Carrico
Carrico, a highly-touted transfer from Ohio State, brings a wealth of talent and experience to WVU’s linebacker corps. While limited opportunities with the Buckeyes have kept him under the radar, Carrico now has the chance to showcase his full potential with the Mountaineers. Carrico is expected to be a force against the run and has been praised for his high football intelligence by his coaches. If Carrico can quickly acclimate to the coaching system and take advantage of his expanded role, he has all the tools to become a standout in the Big 12 and a key leader for WVU’s defense this season.
Dontez Fagan
Fagan’s journey to WVU has been anything but ordinary, reflecting his passion for the game. Starting his college career at Central Oklahoma, the cornerback showcased his talent at the Division II level for two seasons before transferring to Independence Community College, where he continued to refine his skills. From there, he made the jump to Charlotte to compete at the FBS level and now finds himself at West Virginia, eager to prove his worth as a redshirt senior. Standing at 5’10” with notable speed and agility, Fagan has faced various obstacles along the way, including the challenge of adjusting to different programs.
Despite the hurdles, Fagan’s determination seemingly remains unwavering. Although he may not see extensive playing time in his final season, he will make the most of every snap. His journey—from DII to DI football—demonstrates his relentless work ethic and desire to contribute wherever possible. If given the chance, Fagan has the potential to make impactful plays, using his experience and perseverance to leave a lasting mark on WVU’s season. He’s a true question mark, but could make his last season an exclamation point on a truly unique collegiate career.
