As Beanie Bishop Jr. fought for a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 53-man roster in training camp on Wednesday, the rookie cornerback found himself in the first brawl of his professional career.
After hitting quarterback Justin Fields on a run alongside linebacker Elandon Roberts, Bishop Jr. sparked a full-team fight including fellow rookies Troy Fautanu and Mason McCormick.
Bishop Jr. was not the immediate target of Fautanu and McCormick’s physical response, but the impact was every player getting involved in the scuffle.
Aside from the altercation, Bishop Jr. has been making a positive impression in the Pittsburgh camp. The rookie even ended on the winning side of two one-on-one drills against star receiver George Pickens, according to Steelers analyst Jack Sperry.
Bishop has until Aug. 27 to secure a spot on Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster, and as of now, odds of him joining former WVU teammate Zach Frazier in Pittsburgh seem high. Bishop will continue to bid for the starting job at slot corner through the end of camp on Aug. 14.
