WVU junior Cassandra Williamson’s season is not done yet.
After breaking the Mountaineers’ program record in the 800-meter at the Big 12 Championship earlier this month, Williamson kicked off West Virginia’s appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Thursday.
Seeded 25th overall in the region, Williamson was projected to narrowly miss the 24-person quarterfinals of the four-day event. After storm delays pushed back the women’s 800-meter, though, Williamson entered ready and found success.
Williamson did not quite match her 2:03.87 program record, running the 800 in 2:04.25, but her performance jumped her all the way up to 11th place, earning her a quarterfinals berth.
The quarterfinals in the women’s 800-meter are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. If Williamson maintains a top-12 position, she will advance to the NCAA Championships this June.
Seniors Sarah Tait and Mikenna Vanderheyden will also compete for WVU on Saturday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Their sole round of competition is scheduled for 5:40 p.m.
