Fifth-year senior Toby Okani, a UIC transfer was the fourth player to commit and transfer to West Virginia this offseason, as the Mountaineers looked to build their roster for the upcoming season.
Okani, a 6-foot-8 wing, spent his last two seasons at UIC, but began his career at Duquesne. This past season he averaged 11.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, two blocks, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
“Toby is poised to have a great senior year,” West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries said. “He’s a very versatile defender. He rebounds the ball at a high rate and has the ability to finish above the rim and will really excel in our transition offense. I just love the flexibility he will give us at both ends of the floor!”
Okani’s career-high came against a Devries-coached Drake team on Feb., 28, where he scored 31 points shooting 50% from the field and 62.5% from three, in a triple-overtime loss. Okani was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 earlier this year for a highlight reel dunk against Valparaiso. He recorded a total of four double-doubles this season.
Okani was unranked coming out of high school, holding just a few offers including, Coastal Carolina, Duquesne, Fairfield, Hofstra and UMass. He received several power-five offers while recently in the transfer portal and took official visits to LSU, St. Bonaventure and WVU, before eventually choosing West Virginia.
