West Virginia pitcher Derek Clark took home two Big 12 awards this week, being named Big 12 Pitcher and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Clark, pitched his second complete game of the season, but his third consecutive outing where he completed 9.0 innings. This past week was Clark’s best performance of the year thus far, pitching a complete game shutout, as he allowed three hits and struck out seven.
Clark, a left-hander from Petersburg, Mich., is in his first season in the gold and blue, transferring from Northwood. Clark was the first Mountaineer to earn a Big 12 weekly award this season.
Clark was injured to start the season but has been great in his four starts. Clark has pitched 37.0 innings to the tune of a 1.70 ERA. He has 31 strikeouts, has allowed only seven earned runs, and has walked eight batters.
Clark and the Mountaineers swept Kansas this past weekend, helping them move into a tie for first place in the Big 12. The Mountaineers hit the road on Wednesday night as they face Marshall in the third game of a three-game series against the Thundering Herd. WVU has won each of the first two games convincingly.
Following Wednesday’s game, WVU returns home as they have a date with No. 17 UCF, who is also near the top of the Big 12 standings.
