Chumley’s four-hit day helps West Virginia cruise past Marshall

The West Virginia baseball team picked up 13 hits en route to defeating Marshall 11-2 in Charleston on Tuesday, to improve to 10-7 on the season.

The Mountaineers were down 2-0 early but gained the lead after a six-run third inning, which they never gave up.

WVU used seven pitchers, who allowed just four hits and struck out Thundering Herd batters 16 times. Robby Porco picked up the win pitching two innings striking out three, allowing one hit and one walk.

Marshall jumped out to a 2-0 lead early, with a runner scoring on a fielder’s choice and another on a RBI double in the first inning. West Virginia’s starter Switalski struggled with control, walking two in the opening frame. He would pitch two innings, allowing the two earned runs on two hits, striking out three.

After a clean two innings, the Mountaineers jumped all over Marshall’s starter Chad Heiner in the third scoring six runs. Sam White would get the rally going hitting a double, scoring two, before he was driven home on a single by Ben Lumsden. Ellis Garcia would single to put two men on with one out. Lumsden would advance to third on a SAC fly off the bat of Kyle West, but it wouldn’t really matter as Reed Chumley hit a three-run homer to give WVU a 6-2 comfortable lead.

West Virginia loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with two outs, where Marshall would walk Garcia allowing a runner to score to make the game 7-2, but would get out of the jam shortly after. They would add another insurance run in the fifth with freshman Spencer Barnett hitting a SAC fly scoring a runner and advancing another to third.

WVU added two more in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double from Garcia and another RBI double from Chumley. West hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth putting the last run of the game on the board, sealing an 11-2 West Virginia victory.

Chumley went four-for-four, picking up four RBIs and scoring two runs. West Virginia was five for 13 with runners in scoring position.

The Mountaineers host Ohio State in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST in their next game action, with all games being streamed to ESPN+.
