Predictions: Can WVU end the regular season with a win?

The West Virginia men’s basketball team is on the road Saturday, playing Cincinnati to close out the regular season.

WVU defeated the Bearcats 69-65 earlier this season and are 11-10 against UC all-time.

Our staff predicts the game:

Wesley Shoemaker: We’ve reached the regular season finale and WVU hits the road for a game against Cincinnati. The Mountaineers had a late comeback the first time and Jesse Edwards was a stud. Edwards was also a stud on Wednesday, and the Mountaineers will lean on him. For me it’s two things, defense and road games. Both have been a problem for WVU and you can’t pick this team to win away from home. UC has a good second half and WVU can’t keep up.

Cincinnati 78, West Virginia 71

Patrick Reneau: WVU plays their regular season finale at Cincinnati and if I had to predict anything, it will be that this road game will go the same as all of the other. This is a WVU team that simply cannot play away from home for reasons we don’t understand. WVU either doesn’t show up at all or doesn’t show up for the first half and then makes it close in the second half. As for tomorrow, i expect one of those to happen. This is a WVU team that has the talent and potential to be a great team, but everything that went wrong for them did end up going wrong and they just couldn’t help it.

Cincinnati 76, West Virginia 68

Ryan Roddy: The Mountaineers have lost four straight and through 40 games have still not won away from the WVU Coliseum. While Cincinnati has had some rough stretches and has been unable to string together back-to-back wins since conference play began. They’ve played their opponents close, but are just 1-4 in their last five games. In West Virginia’s win over the Bearcats in January, Jesse Edwards notched 25 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. He is coming off a 36-point performance on senior night, the most points scored by a Mountaineer in a game since 2009. If the WVU defense can hold its own I’m predicting an offensive explosion by the Mountaineers in the second half, leading to their first road win of the season in the last regular season game.

West Virginia 80, Cincinnati 73
